Your grid connection is full, but your business needs to grow. An extra charging plaza. A new production line. A battery on top. The grid simply cannot always keep up. And upgrading your connection? That often takes years and costs a fortune.

The good news: you usually do not need more capacity. You are simply not using the capacity you already have intelligently enough. That is where load balancing comes in.

TL;DR

Most businesses only use their grid connection to its full extent for a fraction of the day. Load balancing squeezes more from that existing headroom, without a grid upgrade and without compromising your operations.

  • Grid operators charge based on your highest power peak. A single quarter-hour at full draw sets your transport tariff for the entire month.
  • Static load balancing divides power in fixed portions and leaves unused capacity on the table. Dynamic load balancing allocates based on real-time demand and uses every available amp.
  • At Intratuin Heerhugowaard, Tibo EMS coordinates solar panels, a battery and chargers in a single control layer. The result: more charging and storage within the same connection.
  • Load balancing distributes power; peak shaving flattens spikes with a battery. Together, they get the most out of your connection.
  • An EMS makes load balancing truly effective, because she recalculates every five minutes on the basis of live data rather than fixed rules.

Those who distribute smartly today will grow tomorrow without waiting for the grid.

What is load balancing?

Load balancing is the intelligent distribution of your available power across different assets and moments in time. It prevents everything from peaking at once and keeps you neatly within your connection limits. Your chargers, machines and battery each receive precisely the power they need, without overloading the grid.

The principle is straightforward. Not everything needs to draw full power at the same moment. By shifting loads intelligently, you use your connection more effectively and get more from the same supply.

Why load balancing is becoming increasingly important

Businesses consume more electricity than ever. Fleets are being electrified, heat pumps are being installed and production runs on power. At the same time, the grid is filling up. In an increasing number of locations the grid is congested and additional capacity simply is not available.

That leaves two options. You apply for a heavier connection, with long lead times and high fixed costs. Or you make smarter use of the capacity you already have.

Load balancing is that second route. It reduces your peak demand without forcing you to cut back on your activities. Three tangible benefits:

  • You avoid expensive peaks. Many grid operators and suppliers charge on the basis of your highest peak. Flatten it, and your bill drops.
  • You grow without upgrading. Extra chargers or machines often fit within your existing connection.
  • You keep running during grid congestion. Smart distribution gives you room where the grid no longer does.

Static versus dynamic load balancing

Not every form of load balancing works equally well. There are broadly two flavours.

Static load balancing divides your power according to a fixed ratio. Ten chargers each receive one-tenth of the available capacity, for example. Simple, but rigid. If half your vehicles are not there, that capacity sits idle.

Dynamic load balancing looks at actual demand in real time. Is only one vehicle charging? It gets full capacity. Is your production line running flat out? The system throttles the chargers temporarily. This way you use every available amp, without ever exceeding your limit.

For businesses with multiple assets, dynamic load balancing is almost always the better choice. You simply get more from the same connection.

Load balancing or peak shaving: what is the difference?

The two are often confused, but they do different things.

Load balancing distributes power across your assets and across time, so nothing peaks simultaneously. Peak shaving flattens your biggest spikes, usually by drawing from a battery at exactly the right moment. More on how reducing peak demand works in practice for manufacturers.

In reality, they reinforce each other. Load balancing keeps your consumption in balance, and a battery catches the remaining peaks. Want to go deeper? Read how you can deploy battery storage as a buffer.

Load balancing with an Energy Management System

Manually juggling power is not an option. Your consumption changes by the minute, your generation is variable and your vehicles come and go. That is why you manage load balancing with an energy management system (EMS).

Tibo EMS handles this automatically and continuously. Our AI algorithm looks five minutes ahead and creates an intelligent schedule for all your assets across a 48-hour horizon. Your solar panels, battery, chargers and machines work together rather than against each other.

At Intratuin Heerhugowaard, that is precisely what happens: solar panels, a battery and chargers are controlled as one system. Generation goes where it is needed most, peaks are flattened automatically and charging stays within the limits of the existing connection.

The results speak for themselves:

  • You stay within your connection at all times, even as you expand.
  • Your peaks drop, and with them your energy costs.
  • You use more of your self-generated power.

Tibo EMS is hardware-agnostic. Whether you have an existing battery, are building a new charging plaza or manage multiple sites: the system connects to what you already have. You do not need to trust a black box, because you can see exactly how your energy flows and what decisions the system makes.

Managing an entire business park? Then you can take load balancing to site level and distribute capacity intelligently across multiple businesses. Read how that works in an energy hub on a business park.

Frequently asked questions

Load balancing is the intelligent distribution of your available power across assets and moments in time, so you stay within your connection and avoid peaks.

Yes. By flattening your highest peaks, the portion of your energy bill based on those peaks decreases. And you avoid the cost of a heavier connection.

No. Load balancing distributes the power you already have. A battery does help to flatten any remaining peaks, but it is not a prerequisite to get started.

That is precisely when it comes into its own. When the grid cannot provide additional capacity, smart distribution helps you get more from the headroom you still have.
