Limited contracted capacity in a historic building
The Hoogvliet supermarket on the Steenovenweg in Utrecht is located in a renovated historic building — a former veiling hall that was transformed from energy label F to A+++++.
At the same time, grid congestion limited the site to 57 kW of contracted capacity. This was not enough to start the store in a conventional setup, as essential installations could not operate simultaneously.
The store also has a large PV installation. The challenge was therefore to make optimal use of the existing grid connection, without upgrading it.
Smart control within existing grid capacity
A combination of high-quality assets and central control was implemented. The solution is designed to align all energy assets within the contracted capacity of 57 kW.
The realised solution consists of:
- A 215 kWh Fox ESS battery storage system (supplied by Brenergie)
- 215 kWh / 100 kW Fox ESS battery storage
- 10 charging points
- A heat pump
- Tibo Energy Management System (EMS)
- Teleport by Withthegrid
“For the first time, grid congestion meant we had insufficient capacity to start up a store. We were looking for a smart and efficient solution and chose the EOS from Brenergie and the EMS from Tibo. This allows us to make optimal use of our grid connection and combine it intelligently with the energy from our large PV installation.”
— Joost van Velzen, Hoogvliet Supermarkets
Fully operational within 57 kW
The supermarket operates entirely within the contracted capacity of 57 kW.
This means:
- The store was able to start operations without upgrading the grid connection.
- The existing connection is being utilized optimally
- Own generation from the PV installation is combined with storage and control
- With improved forecasting and a dynamic energy contract, energy use is further optimised
“The supermarket is now running smoothly and no customer notices anything. We now have insight and control. The next case for this chain is currently underway, but this is an example for the industry.”
— Jorn Schaffer, owner of Brenergie,
