THE BACKGROUND
The need of DC fast chargers on site
LVS is an official Volvo Trucks and Renault Trucks dealer, based in Broek op Langedijk, the Netherlands. In addition to sales, LVS operates a truck repair facility where damaged vehicles and those returning from maintenance need to get back on the road quickly.
With the growing share of electric trucks in their sales and service operations, LVS needed DC fast chargers on site. The existing contracted grid capacity was sufficient for day-to-day business operations, but fell short for charging electric trucks. LVS needed a solution that worked within the constraints of the current connection.
Elektropartners and Tibo Energy took on this challenge together, developing a solution tailored to the site’s specific constraints.
THE APPROACH
Sizing solar, storage and chargers around a constrainted grid
LVS, Elektropartners and Tibo Energy worked together in a building team approach, with LVS giving full trust and freedom to solve the problem.
The first step was a simulation from Tibo Energy. Existing quarter-hourly consumption data was loaded into the model, alongside the expected charging demand from electric trucks. The simulation determined how much battery energy storage was needed to enable electric trucks charging without grid upgrade.
Based on the simulation outcomes, the following system was designed and installed by Elektropartners:
- 125 kWp solar PV
- 2 × Huawei LUNA 100/200 battery storage systems
- 2 × Schneider 60 kW DC fast chargers
“We loaded the existing quarter-hourly data into Tibo’s simulation and determined the expected charging demand. Based on those outcomes, we could determine exactly how much battery storage was needed. The client gave us full freedom to solve the problem, and that trust made the project work.” — Dennis Koopmans, Project Manager, Elektropartners
After installation, Tibo Energy’s Energy Management System controls the DC chargers, batteries and solar generation in real time, balancing charging demand, storage and generation within the limits of the grid connection.
THE RESULTS
Charging electric trucks without a grid upgrade
LVS can now charge electric trucks on site without upgrading the grid connection. Solar PV and battery storage provide the additional capacity, the EMS keeps everything within the limits of the grid. The simulation determined upfront what was needed, so the system matches the actual demand of the site. As the share of electric trucks in LVS’s operations grows, the infrastructure is already in place.
