In 2023, Lidl announced its goal to deliver to all Dutch stores fully electrically by 2030. Since March 2024, the retailer has already transitioned to 100% fossil-free deliveries. The rollout began in the North Holland region, which includes the country’s largest low-emission zone: Amsterdam.

“At Lidl, we are actively taking steps towards a more sustainable future. One of our key ambitions is to fully electrify deliveries to all our stores by 2030. We deliberately go beyond regulations, because sustainability is part of our conviction. We started in North Holland — not by chance: Amsterdam has the largest low-emission zone,” says Robert Dierdorp, Project Lead at Lidl.

Almere DC as a strategic charging point

The Almere distribution centre is located directly off the A27 and serves as a strategic charging location for both Lidl and its transport partners. In addition, local businesses can access the chargers during off-peak hours. Due to local grid congestion, the site operates with limited capacity and zero feed-in.

The project scope includes 17 electric trucks, six 350-kilowatt DC fast chargers, 5.9 megawatt-peak of rooftop solar, two megawatt-hours of battery storage and integration with Lidl’s route planning system.

Energy control with Tibo EMS

Tibo Energy’s EMS coordinates all energy flows, matching charging sessions to logistics planning and optimising the real-time use of solar power, batteries and grid supply. The system prevents unnecessary curtailment, enables automated HBE tracking, and optimises for CO₂ reduction, energy costs and grid limitations. It also supports strategic energy procurement and prepares the site for flexible grid connections in the future.

“This project demonstrates what is possible, even in a congested grid area. Not only does it enable smart charging today, it also prepares for tomorrow’s demand,” says Remco Eikhout, CEO of Tibo Energy.
